From the folks at the Yorkshire Dales Distillery comes this "Army Strength" (50% abv) Desert Ram gin from Sarah and Tony, a veteran owned and family-run business situated in a picturesque town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It blew our socks straight off, so much so that we included it in our August 2023 Gin Club box. They make spirits for the people, with the people and by the people. I love that tagline.
These guys are the real deal, not only do they quadruple distil in very small batches using traditional techniques, local botanicals, and a unique ancient mineral water source from Swaledale they also provide meaningful training and employment to service veterans and dependants, young people, ex-offenders and the long term unemployed. Nice one guys!
The gin itself has an exceptionally smooth and intriguing nose that kicks off with a bolt of juniper and a haze of sweet peppermint and pine which is followed on the palate by a musky flush of citrus, cardamom and floral tones before lingering delicately with a hint of clove and a dash of strawberry.
